Cillian Murphy reveals shocking fact about his ‘Oppenheimer’ role

Cillian Murphy sat down for his 60 Minutes interview where he revealed a surprising detail behind his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

“I said I’d do it before I read it,” he admitted. “I do honestly think it was one of the best screenplays I’ve ever read. But I had already said yes before reading it.”

After having worked on several iconic films before with the director including Inception and Dunkirk, he said, “It’s always paid off for me, you know, in every film that I worked with him on.”

Despite preparing significantly for the film and dropping 30 pounds to portray him accurately, Murphy explained that he still had to rely on his instincts, “I think instinct is your most powerful tool that you have as an actor. Nothing must be predetermined… It’s like being buffeted by the wind and being buffeted by emotion.”

It paid off for the Peaky Blinders actor, who went on to win Best Actor at the 96th Academy Awards.

“During World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their work comes to fruition on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world's first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history,” reads the synopsis of the ambitious film.
