Cillian Murphy will finally be returning to the cult classic horror franchise he first starred in back in 2002, 28 Days Later.

The director of the sequel, Danny Boyle, confirmed the Oppenheimer actor’s involvement while discussing the third film in the series, 28 Years Later, coming to theaters on June 20.

In an interview with Business Insider, the Slumdog Millionaire director unveiled that the Oscar winner will not be a part of the trilogy but Is set to return in the fourth movie, a sequel to the three parter, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple which is slated for an early 2026 release.

“He is in the second one, I shouldn’t give away too much. I’ll get killed,” Boyle confirmed of Murphy’s reprisal.

The 68-year-old, who filmed the thriller’s third addition on iPhones, credited the Peaky Blinder star’s influence playing a larger part for the series than just his acting.

“You promise them Cillian Murphy, that’s quite a deflection of any technical concerns. They soon forget. We nakedly used that to get our own way. What better promise could you make?” Boyle noted, referring to him getting the move approved likely by the film’s producers.

Notably, the Trainspotting director even hinted that he hoped Murphy’s association with the movie would help with the financing of the sequel.
