Why both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are ditching dresses for power suits

Kate Middleton made a strong fashion statement this week as she stepped out in a sleek Victoria Beckham suit, continuing a trend that’s sweeping through royal wardrobes.

Over the past few months, both Kate and Meghan Markle have increasingly favoured tailored power suits over traditional dresses, embracing a look that's redefining modern royal style.

Fashion expert Reto Peter, Co-founder of Edit Suits Co, said the shift signals empowerment.

“When such high-profile female celebrities choose to wear tailored suits for big events, it positions the look as more than just functional attire but as a strong statement of empowerment and style,” he explained.

Princess Kate, 43, has been leading the charge, often seen in suits at more casual or semi-formal events.

According to Peter, the “Kate Effect” is expanding beyond royal watchers. Celebrities like Jessie J and Emma Willis at the BAFTAs have embraced similar looks, helping fuel the surge in demand for custom tailoring for women.

“It also strengthens the narrative that tailoring is no longer gender-exclusive,” Peter said, noting the rise of androgynous styles in mainstream fashion.

Meghan Markle, meanwhile, has leaned into the trend with her own twist. Speaking at the 2025 TIME100 Summit, the Duchess of Sussex opted for an oversized, relaxed-fit suit, a nod to Gen Z’s love for baggy, comfortable silhouettes that challenge traditional beauty standards.
