Kendrick Lamar is continuing his dominance in hip-hop and pop music in general.
The rapper’s collaborative song with SZA, Luther, has set a new record after topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart for twelve straight weeks.
The track, titled after R&B legend Luther Vandross, was released on November 29, 2024, as the third single from Lamar’s highly successful GNX album.
According to Billboard, the duo has now tied Sean “Diddy” Combs and Faith Evans’ 1997 song I’ll Be Missing You for the most weeks spent at number one among duets by co-billed lead solo men and women.
Interestingly, Lamar’s longtime rival Drake is witnessing his song NOKIA drop to number five on the chart.
NOKIA was released on March 11, 2025, by the Canadian rapper as part of his album $ome $exy $ongs 4 U, and it was taunted to dethrone Luther’s chart-topping reign.
However, it now seems likely that Lamar has solidified his status as rap’s undisputed king, much like he proclaimed in Like That that it is “just big me” in contemporary hip-hop.
The music video of Luther (much like NOKIA) was shot in black and white and is directed by Drake’s ex-collaborator and fellow Canadian Karena Evans.
Evans previously called the shots for many of Drake’s music videos, including God’s Plan and I’m Upset.
