Hollywood is having a resurgence in recent years after grappling with the fallout from COVID but rest assured that cinema is well and truly back and the box office is proof.
From unexpected sleeper hits like A Minecraft Movie ruling the box office to horror flicks bringing in repeat watchers to the cinema, summer 2025 is shaping up to be quite a happening time for movies, and here’s a list of films that you must watch if you’re a film buff.
The live-action adaptation of the popular game A Minecraft Movie defied expectations upon its 4 April release, smashing box office numbers on its opening weekend with a $301 million gross.
Starring names like Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge, and Emma Myers, and directed by Jared Hess, the film has so far raked in $436.6 million overseas and a whopping $816 million globally, easily making it the biggest box office draw in 2025.
Marvel’s latest offering of 2025, Captain America: Brave New World, released on 14 February, debuting with a $40 million opening weekend, and ended its box office run with a $200.2 million domestic gross and a global box office earning of $414.8 million.
With a budget of $180 million, the fourth instalment features Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America after Chris Evans’ last appearance as Sam Wilson in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, and the story picks up from where the Disney+ 2021 series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier left off.
Perhaps the buzziest film on the cinema circuit right now, Sinners is setting some exciting records at the box office.
The R-rated vampire thriller stars Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, amongst others and is proving to be the surprise hit of the year after topping the box office on its 17 April release with a $48 million gross.
Despite competition from A Minecraft Movie, Sinners is continuing a successful box office run, with a $45 million second weekend gross, declining just 6% from its opening weekend — a rare feat for a horror flick.
Bong Joon Ho’s latest Hollywood outing, starring Robert Pattinson, may not have performed exceptionally at the box office, but the film clicked with its audience, with social media lauding the premise and especially Pattinson’s performance.
Released on 7 March, Mickey 17 has managed to rake in $131.8 million worldwide, after premiering at the Berlin Film Festival. However, don’t be swayed by its box office numbers, as the film boasts an impressive 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Directed by the creator of the Ocean’s franchise, Steven Soderbergh, Black Bag is one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year. The film boasts an ensemble cast that includes Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, and has a stunning 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The spy thriller, much like Mickey 17, did not resonate with the broader audience, which is reflected in its lacklustre box office earnings. However, due to its relatively low budget, the film is likely to break even when it becomes available on streaming platforms.
