English actor Isabella May Ramsey, aka Bella Ramsey, has been playing the role of Ellie in the HBO post-apocalyptic drama series The Last of Us since 2023.
The Last of Us: season 2 premiered on HBO on April 13, 2025, and since then, the cast members, directors and other related people have been revealing behind-the-scenes emotions of the show.
While the 3rd episode of the show streams this Sunday, the breakout star of the show, Ramsey, reveals what was the hardest scene on the episode, which made her feel “really worried”.
Ramsey shared that the scene in which Ellie breaks down while smelling Joel’s, Pedro Pascal, jacket was the moment they were most anxious about getting right.
“Oh God, in the closet, that was the hardest [scene],” the Emmy nominee said. “So I really struggle with crying in scenes. I can get a tear out, but that’s different to crying. And even getting the tear, it doesn’t come easy for me.”
The 21-year-old award-winning actor confessed that she doesn’t cry in front of people, and only a few people will see her cry in her everyday life. So, crying in front of all the people watching on the monitors on the set and without a monitor too was almost as impossible an experience for Bella.
“ So I was really worried about that scene, and that was the toughest one for me to shoot,” Ramsey says.
The Game of Thrones actor said that whenever she gets a crying scene before she used to think about something sad going on in her life and “try to evoke emotions that way”.
But doing so for this show isn’t doable since it’ll pull her out of the character and situation of Ellie. So, the actor pulled it off in a very smart way by remembering the happy memories she had with Pedro Pascal.
“The thing that is always the saddest for me is remembering the happy things,” the actor states that she was reminding herself the first few times she and Pascal met, the moments of season one shooting and other funniest moments.
“I was remembering all of that and through the lens of losing him — not just Joel and Ellie, but like me and Pedro—because the memories of me and Pedro and Joel and Ellie are so intertwined for me.” She concludes.
