As royal fans mark what would have been Queen Elizabeth II’s 99th birthday, stories of her unwavering love for her pets are once again making the rounds.
Throughout her 70-year reign, the late Queen was known for her loyalty to duty and her love for dogs and horses, especially her iconic royal corgis, of which she owned over 30 during her lifetime.
Her very first, Dookie, was gifted to her at age seven — and she famously brought her corgi Susan along on her honeymoon in 1947.
So when a royal family member reportedly joked that the corgis “should be shot”, Her Majesty didn’t let it slide.
The comment came from none other than Princess Michael of Kent, known for her blunt takes.
And when asked her thoughts on the Queen’s beloved pups, she allegedly quipped that they “should be shot.”
The Queen’s legendary response, according to the book The Wicked Wit of Queen Elizabeth II was: “They’re better behaved than she is.”
