Meghan Markle is facing criticism over what many are calling an "excessive" and "absolutely abnormal" security presence during her recent solo outing in New York City.
The Duchess of Sussex, 42, attended a performance of the Broadway revival of Gypsy on Thursday night, arriving with a four-car motorcade that included three black SUVs and an unmarked NYPD police vehicle.
According to Page Six, the convoy reportedly involved former Secret Service agents and two intelligence detectives from the NYPD.
"Meghan is out of control and over-the-top, and it’s ridiculous if the city is paying for this," said an anonymous photographer. "And if NYPD was not on duty, then they shouldn’t be allowed to run lights. Somebody’s got to be paying for it.”
The Duchess attended the performance without Prince Harry, who is currently on a humanitarian visit to Ukraine.
Prior to the show, Meghan dined at the upscale Polo Bar by Ralph Lauren, adding to what critics are calling an “out of touch” display of celebrity privilege.
Despite the fanfare, Meghan kept a low profile during the performance at the Majestic Theatre and was later spotted backstage mingling with the cast, including Broadway legend Audra McDonald.
Meghan later posted about the experience on Instagram, praising McDonald's performance: “Meeting @audramcdonald for the first time last night… Her performance will leave you absolutely speechless. Full body chills.”
