Eric Dane, nicknamed ‘McSteamy’ for the role of Dr Marc Sloan in Grey’s Anatomy, broke the news of his illness to devastated fans.
The 52-year-old noted that he was entering a new phase of his life after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
In an interview with People, Eric told, "I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
ALS is a motor neuron disease, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, which causes progressive paralysis of the muscles. The terminal degenerative disorder robs people of the ability to use their limbs, to speak, swallow and eventually breathe independently, and is incurable.
Eric shared alongside the news of his ailment that he would not be taking a break from acting, saying, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
The Charmed actor plays the role of Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, which will air its third season in 2026.
The news of Eric’s illness evoked sympathetic reactions from fans, with one writing, “A very difficult diagnosis to navigate - I wish him and his family all the best going forward."
Another penned down “Speechless. [sad face emoji] One never knows what the next day will bring. Thoughts with him and his family.”
A third chimed in, “I am devastated to hear this. I know he has the best doctors and a loving wife and children.”
Notably, Eric is married to Rebecca Gayheart and the couple share two children, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.
