Royal insiders are calling on King Charles III to take a step back from some of his royal responsibilities to safeguard his health, following his recent hospital visit linked to ongoing cancer treatment.

The 76-year-old monarch was briefly hospitalized on Thursday after experiencing side effects from his treatment, which sparked concern among royal fans worldwide.

Though the Palace said it was only a “short period of observation,” experts say the King’s packed schedule may be taking its toll.

Royal author Ingrid Seward, who penned My Mother and I, told Newsweek that Charles's relentless work ethic could endanger his recovery and urged him to delegate some duties — especially investiture ceremonies.

“He could just step back from the investitures,” Seward suggested. “There’s the Princess Royal, Prince Edward — there’s no reason they couldn’t take that on.”

The comments came shortly after King Charles returned to Windsor Castle on Tuesday to lead an investiture — his first public appearance since his hospital visit and retreat to Highgrove House in Gloucestershire for rest.

But with a major state visit to Italy scheduled for April 7, where he and Queen Camilla are expected to attend a four-day slate of official engagements — including a state banquet, a Parliament visit, and even a stop at the Colosseum — royal watchers are worried that the King is pushing himself too hard.

What happened to King Charles?

King Charles has been undergoing treatment for cancer since his diagnosis in February 2024. Recently, he experienced temporary side effects from his ongoing treatment, leading to a brief hospitalization on March 27. Following medical observation, he was discharged and returned to his residence at Clarence House.

Despite this health setback, King Charles resumed his public duties shortly thereafter. On April 1, 2025, he presided over an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, appearing in good spirits and engaging with honorees.
