The Broadway production of Othello starring Hollywood actors Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhall has broken a major record.
The show managed to rake in $2.6 million across just seven shows at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
The play officially made its debut on March 23 for a limited 15 week engagement plan.
However, the financial success of the show isn’t necessarily because of the quality, but because of the hefty ticket prices coming in at $361.90.
For the sake of perspective, the second highest ticket prices at Broadway was for The Outsiders at $155.
With the premium prices going as high as $921 for Row M, the production has also sparked conversations about the increasingly rising prices for theatre performances.
Othello has been directed by Kenny Leon, with the producer being Brian Moreland. Former The Real Housewives of Atlanta star, Kandi Burruss is also producing along with her husband, Todd Tucker.
The couple have also been responsible for working on other projects such as Thoughts of a Colored Man (2021), The Piano Lesson, as well as The Wiz.
