King Charles is mourning the loss of Aga Khan, whom he considered a close personal friend.

The spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims, Aga Khan IV, passed away at the age of 88 in Portugal on Tuesday, surrounded by his family, as confirmed by the Aga Khan Foundation.

King Charles had reportedly been in private contact with Aga Khan’s family following the news of his passing. The Aga Khan was also a longtime friend of Queen Elizabeth II, sharing a mutual love for horse racing.

The two royals frequently attended Royal Ascot together, and the Queen even hosted a special dinner in his honour at Buckingham Palace in 2008.

Aga Khan IV became the 49th hereditary Imam of the Ismaili Muslims at the age of 20 after succeeding his grandfather, Aga Khan III, in 1957.

As a devoted horse breeder, he owned the legendary Derby-winning racehorse Shergar, who was kidnapped from his Irish stud farm in 1983 and never found.

In 2019, the Prince and Princess of Wales met with Aga Khan at an event in London, held at the Aga Khan Centre, where they engaged with British-Pakistani business leaders, musicians, chefs, and artists.
