Sherlock Holmes fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the third instalment in the action-packed film series directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr. as the iconic detective. 

The Sherlock Holmes character, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, has had a lasting impact on storytelling, inspiring numerous adaptations in television, gaming, and film. 

It's clear that many of today's detective tales and murder mysteries owe a debt to the adventures of Holmes and his loyal assistant, Dr John Watson.

There's also the potential for other beloved supporting characters to make a comeback. Kelly Reilly, Stephen Fry, and Eddie Marsan, acclaimed for his work in The World's End, could return.

But what about the iconic nemesis, Professor Moriarty? Despite his presumed demise at the end of the last film, there are whispers that Jared Harris could return to reprise the role of the criminal mastermind. 

Who directed Sherlock Holmes 3? 

While Ritchie won't be in the director's chair, he has expressed openness to being involved in the project in some capacity. 

The reins of directing will be handed over to Dexter Fletcher, acclaimed for his work on Rocketman.
