Arnold Schwarzenegger made an awkward mistake when he first met Maria Shiver's mother.

Arnold Schwarzenegger recalls meeting his future wife Maria Shriver and his prospective mother-in-law Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1977, as well as the somewhat surprising method he made his feelings about Shriver known. He was speaking in a Netflix docuseries.

The Kennedys personally invited the actor, as he recalled in the three-part series "Arnold," to participate in the Robert F. Kennedy Pro-Celebrity Tennis Tournament, a charitable event held every year in the 1970s.

Schwarzenegger stated he consented even though he had never touched a tennis racket in his life because he believed it would increase his exposure as at the time, he was still a rising star in the film industry and had not yet been in any of his career-defining films, such "The Terminator" and "Twins."

"Before the actual tennis tournament, there was a big party. All of the Kennedys were there," he said.

"Eunice came up to me and said, 'Oh, hi, it's so good to have you here. By the way, this is my daughter, Maria Shriver.'"

After this encounter, Eunice reportedly told Schwarzenegger that Shriver was "fond" of him, to which he allegedly quip, "Well, your daughter has a really nice a**."

"I said, 'I have to tell you that,'" he continued. "Eunice said, 'Thank you,' and then she walked away, kind of like, 'What the hell.'"

"It was a stupid thing to say. I don't know why I said it," Schwarzenegger laughed.

Shriver was 21 years old and Schwarzenegger was 30 at the time. Schwarzenegger claimed that while playing, Shriver could be seen closely observing him "the entire time."
