Sharon Stone has opened up about a gruelling health battle that left her feeling "sick as a dog" for months after making the bold decision to stop taking her long-term stroke medication and give up cannabis.

The 68-year-old actress revealed she had been prescribed medication ever since suffering a life-threatening brain haemorrhage in 2001.

Despite doctors warning her she should never stop taking it, the Basic Instinct star said she was determined to reclaim what she called a "drug-free life".

Speaking to Variety, the Hollywood actress admitted coming off the medication was far tougher than she ever expected.

She compared the experience to withdrawing from heroin, revealing she was seriously ill for almost four and a half months.

Sharon explained that after finally getting through that ordeal, she decided to quit smoking cannabis too.

However, the move triggered another difficult spell, with the actress saying she was unwell for around a month.

She claimed modern cannabis is far stronger than it used to be and recalled her neurologist warning that he had treated patients who had suffered severe marijuana-related emergencies.

The Oscar-nominated star said the painful journey was worth it because she wanted to regain control of her health and life after years of relying on medication following her stroke.

Sharon has previously spoken about how the devastating medical emergency transformed her outlook forever.

The Casino actress nearly died after the stroke, forcing her to step away from Hollywood at the height of her career.

Instead of chasing blockbuster roles, she chose to focus on raising her three adopted sons, only working enough to support her family.

Now that her children have grown up and left home, Sharon says she is embracing a fresh chapter, returning to acting with a renewed appreciation for both her health and her career.
