Filmmaker Olivia Wilde opens up about the backlash that overshadowed 'Don't Worry Darling'
Olivia Wilde has reflected on the controversy surrounding Don’t Worry Darling and disclosed how the public reaction affected the movie’s launch.
The actress and filmmaker reflected on the “multidimensional scandals” surrounding the psychological thriller during an appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast.
During the chat, Louis Theroux noted that the film’s release was overshadowed by the attention around the American star’s personal life, including her highly publicised split from Harry Styles.
"I think it did hurt the film for sure because we didn't get to have the conversations about what the film was trying to say, which was a shame because so many people worked so hard to make that film in the depths of COVID," she mentioned.
She added that the experience was painful and admitted she was unaware of how harsh online discussions could become.
"It hurt me for sure, because I was so naive up until that point about the grinder, the garbage disposal that the internet can be," she said.
She further explained that promoting The Invite has felt refreshing, as she has finally been able to discuss the film’s themes instead of facing controversy.
