One of the most photographed homes on Lake Coeur d'Alene has just come up for sale. Known locally as the "House on the Rock," the glass-walled property perched on a giant boulder in Harrison, Idaho, has drawn attention for decades, and its current owners are now asking just under $10 million for it.
This 2,190 square feet house is located in the ultra-exclusive Gozzer Ranch Golf and Lake Club neighborhood, perched on a peninsula that is surrounded by water on three sides. The house was constructed in the 1970s by a private individual whose plan was to build a guesthouse on top of the rock structure.
Inside the House on the Rock
The most prominent feature of this house is its transparent walls that provide a panoramic view of the lake from all rooms in the house. According to the listing agent April Gunther of eXp Realty, the feeling one gets from the views is that of floating on water without moving from where one is standing.
With a total of three bedrooms and bathrooms, the primary house has been augmented by two guest houses with glass walls constructed by the present owners, along with linking the property to the central sewer system.
The 3.5 acre land plot provides 320 feet of waterfront as well as a personal boat dock. The architectural firm Olson Kundig has already drafted plans for the new design of the primary house along with another residential unit that will be transferred to the purchaser as part of the transaction.
Club membership at Gozzer Ranch is based upon land ownership, which makes the home one of the few waterfront properties that will be able to guarantee club access. The previous and current members include Wayne Gretzky, Mark Wahlberg, Chris Pratt, Justin Bieber, and Kim Kardashian.
The rock predates even the house. The rock had been the site of a dance floor for soldiers who were stationed at the nearby Fort Sherman military base in the late 1800s and came in their steamboats along with the visiting symphony of Spokane. Once the fort was shut down, the rock area was made into a boys’ camp until the home was built.
