Shania Twain has revealed she pushed herself to dangerous extremes in a desperate bid to stay slim during the menopause.
The 60-year-old country music icon admitted that she became so unhappy with her changing body that she stopped looking in the mirror altogether.
She has opened up about one of the toughest periods of her life, confessing she felt powerless as her body changed while performing during her Las Vegas residency in 2019.
Speaking candidly, the Man! I Feel Like a Woman! hitmaker said menopause left her feeling bloated and frustrated because the methods she had relied on for years to maintain her figure suddenly stopped working.
“I stopped looking at myself in the mirror. I hated my body,” she admitted.
“I’m like, ‘Oh, I cannot stand this changing body.’”
Determined to lose weight, Shania drastically cut fats and sugars from her diet and pushed herself harder in the gym.
But the songstress now recognises she took things too far.
“I was malnourished,” she confessed.
“I was doing very unhealthy things and working my body more than I was feeding it.”
The star eventually realised the punishing regime was doing more harm than good, especially when it aggravated a thigh injury and slowed her recovery.
That wake-up call forced her to rethink her relationship with her body.
Today, Shania says she has completely embraced the woman she has become.
“Bring on the mirrors,” she laughed. “I’m going to look at myself all day long!”
You're Still The One singer believes menopause taught her an important lesson and that some things simply cannot be controlled and that self-acceptance is far healthier than chasing perfection.
And despite turning 60, the superstar insists she has no intention of slowing down.
The chart-topping star says her curiosity for life remains as strong as ever, adding that there is always “a new flower, new recipe, new horse” waiting to be discovered.
