Rob Base, the rap artist whose real name was Robert Ginyard, has passed away just days after his 59th birthday.
The Get on the Dance Floor rapper’s death was announced on social media via his official account with the cause of death also being revealed.
“Today, we share the heartbreaking news that hip hop legend Rob Base passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family after a private battle with cancer,” the statement on his Instagram read.
“Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world. Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten,” it continued.
The Harlem native was one half of a hip-hop duo with DJ E-Z Rock, with the pair quickly gaining fame with their track It Takes Two.
Since then, the track has gone on to become a part of many more pieces of media such as being sampled by Snoop Dogg or the Black Eyed Peas, and appearing in movies like the 2009 hit romantic comedy The Proposal.
Notably, tributes have started pouring in for the late rapper by people such as NFL Hall-of-Fame football star Deion Sanders and comedian Dane Cook.
