Country music fans were left emotional as Blake Shelton delivered a spine-tingling tribute to late songwriter Don Schlitz at the 61st Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas.

The 49-year-old star brought the ceremony to a dramatic close with a powerful rendition of Kenny Rogers’ timeless hit The Gambler.

Notably, the legendary track was penned by Schlitz, who sadly died last month aged 73 after a sudden illness.

As Shelton walked onto the stage, dazzling neon lights lit up the arena in true Vegas style, while the opening chords of the country classic instantly sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Guitar in hand and dressed for the occasion, the Oklahoma native had the entire MGM Grand Garden Arena singing along word for word.

Originally released in 1978 by Kenny Rogers, The Gambler became one of the biggest songs in country music history.

It crossed over into the pop charts and cementing itself as a fan favourite across generations.

Ahead of the emotional performance, Shelton admitted the track has always held a special place in his heart.

“That particular song is like two legends came together and made one of the most important pieces of music in country music history,” he said.

The God’s Country singer previously recorded his own version of the hit back in 2006 and recently released a fresh cover on Amazon Music to mark the ACM performance.

The moving tribute not only honoured Schlitz’s songwriting genius, but also celebrated Rogers’ enduring legacy, leaving fans on their feet for one unforgettable finale.
