Cary Elwes has revealed he handed the iconic sword from The Princess Bride straight back to director Rob Reiner when filming wrapped.
The 63-year-old star insisted that the memories meant far more than any Hollywood keepsake ever could.
Cary, who famously played swashbuckling hero Westley in the beloved fantasy classic, admitted he never felt the need to cling to the famous prop despite the film becoming one of cinema’s most treasured cult hits.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, he said: “No, I gave it to Rob Reiner on the last day of filming. My memories of the film are my greatest keepsake.”
The emotional confession comes as fans continue to rediscover the 1987 movie through anniversary screenings, streaming platforms and sold-out live shows, where Saw actor tours with the film decades after its release.
The Crush star who starred alongside Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Billy Crystal and André the Giant, admitted he is still stunned by the film’s enduring popularity.
“It’s really inconceivable,” he joked, referencing one of the movie’s most famous catchphrases.
Cary also credited Rob for transforming his career, saying the filmmaker convinced Hollywood he could balance comedy with serious acting, eventually leading to his starring role in Robin Hood: Men in Tights alongside Mel Brooks.
The renewed attention surrounding the fantasy favourite has also carried a bittersweet edge following the reported deaths of Rob and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in December 2025.
Earlier this year, he paid tribute to his late friend on Instagram, writing: “Still hard to believe you’re gone. Missing you so much.”
