Miss Brazil finalist Ana Mateus dead after fall, boyfriend kills self in jail

Ana Luiza Mateus has died on Wednesday after falling from the 13th floor of her apartment building in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro.

The body of the high-profile 29-years-old Brazilian beauty queen, was found in the service area of her flats, according to CNN Brasil.

Her boyfriend, Endreo Cunha, was taken in on suspicion of gender-based killing of women.

Soon after being taken in custody for questioning, Cunha was found dead in his cell.

As per the local media source g1 reports, he committed suicide by asphyxiation (suffocation).

“We received the news with sadness and dismay. We stand in solidarity with her family and friends,” wrote the contest in a social media post.

“In light of the details surrounding this incident, the case calls for urgent reflection on violence against women in Brazil.”

They further raised concern, “It is a reality that must be confronted with seriousness, commitment, and collective action.”

Although, inspections are ongoing, witnesses told local media that they saw the couple fighting day prior to Mateus's death.

Mateus was a psychologist and had been chosen to represent the state of Bahia at Miss Cosmo Brazil, scheduled for later this year.

No more information on the case has been released and an investigation into the deaths of both individuals is underway.
