Speaking on the Dish from Waitrose podcast, the Foo Fighters frontman reflected on how starstruck he felt after watching Bowie perform at a festival in the 1990s.
Grohl described the experience as “otherworldly” and even compared it to a “religious experience,” admitting he was overwhelmed by Bowie’s presence on stage.
However, when the two later met in a recording studio, around the time Grohl contributed guitar to Bowie’s Heathen album, the conversation took an awkward turn.
When Bowie asked what he thought of the performance, Grohl panicked and blurted out what he later called a “horrible” response.
“The first thing I noticed was all of your imperfections,” Grohl admitted, immediately regretting his words and scrambling to recover.
According to People, he later reflected on the moment, saying he “would never say that to anybody,” acknowledging how badly the comment came out.
Despite the awkward start, the encounter turned into a memorable experience for Grohl, who went on to witness Bowie’s remarkable talent in the studio.
Furthermore, he praised the singer’s ability to deliver flawless vocals in a single take, describing it as both “beautiful” and reassuring.
