Denise Jonas has opened up about a terrifying stroke that left her struggling to speak, but insists the ordeal changed her life for the better.
The 59-year-old mum of Joe Jonas, Nick Jonas, Kevin Jonas and Franklin Jonas revealed the medical emergency affected her brain’s basal ganglia, impacting her speech, reasoning and cognitive thinking.
Speaking on Got It From My Momma, Denise admitted she still has moments where she “fumbles” her words, especially when she’s tired or hungry.
In a chilling account, she described waking up with unusual symptoms after months of high blood pressure, including what she called “weird” arms.
One overlooked warning sign was persistent hiccups, something she claims is rarely discussed in women suffering strokes.
Things took a frightening turn when she tried to grab a glass of water and her hand simply wouldn’t respond.
“I was telling my hand, but my hand wasn’t listening to my brain,” she recalled.
Despite the trauma, Denise stunned fans by calling the stroke a “gift”.
She said the health scare forced her to slow down, listen to her body and finally set boundaries, something she had struggled with before.
“It caused me to really be still,” she shared.
Life hasn’t been the same since, with spontaneity now a challenge.
But Denise says she’s learned a powerful lesson and that is knowing when to say no.
