Pop icon Britney Spears is back in the headlines after her former assistant raised eyebrows over the timing of her recent DUI arrest, calling the whole situation “suspicious”.

The 44-year-old singer was arrested last week in Ventura, California, on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

But her former assistant and longtime friend Sean Phillip believes something about the incident doesn’t add up.

Speaking to Extra, Sean questioned why the arrest came so soon after Toxic hitmaker reportedly secured financial independence by selling her music catalogue for a staggering $200 million.

“I think there are some people out to get her,” he claimed.

“The timing is so off that she gets financial independence and then she’s arrested.”

Sean went even further, suggesting some may be hoping the drama could lead to Britney being placed back under legal control.

Something fans fought fiercely to end when her 13-year conservatorship was terminated in 2021.

“We all think it’s a push to put her back in a conservatorship,” he said.

“Because guess what happened when the conservatorship stopped? People stopped getting money.”

Despite the end of the arrangement, he insists that he still isn’t convinced Criminal singer has full control over her life or finances.

“I don’t think she’s free,” he added, claiming a care plan is still in place and suggesting others may still have access to her money.

The songstress reportedly texted him shortly after the arrest with a brief message: “I’m okay, I’m okay.”

Britney is due to appear in court on 4 May, and Sean hopes she will address the situation publicly.

“She can squash everything in a second if she speaks for herself,” he said.

Meanwhile, her ex-husband Sam Asghari urged the media to respect her privacy, while former spouse Kevin Federline recently said the pressures of fame from such a young age had played a major role in her struggles.
