Jim Carrey has been chosen to receive a prestigious honorary award at the 51st César Awards this year, and the actor chose to show off his new language skills to the audience.

The How the Grinch Stole Christmas star was introduced on stage by Michel Gondry, the director who helmed the actor’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind more than two decades ago.

Beginning in French, with his noticeable French accent, the 64-year-old said, “As an actor, each character you play is like clay in the sculptor’s hands, which you shape to your heart’s desire. How fortunate I have been to share this art with so many people who have truly opened their hearts to me.”

Jim then revealed that he shared some lineage with the European nation, since his great grandfather was born in Saint Malo, so he felt like the moment had come full circle.

The Bruce Almighty actor then went on to his daughter Jane, grandson Jackson and girlfriend Mina as well as his father Percy Carrey in his speech.

Jim ended the emotional address by asking the crowd, “So, how was my French? Almost mediocre, right? Forgive me, I didn’t speak French, but I’m just learning it. My tongue is tired.”

Notably, the father-of-one’s appearance sparked some speculation online since he looked different than usual with his black locks grown out.
