Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight opened up about his original idea for the hit crime series.

The show starring Cillian Murphy as Thomas Shelby, a cunning and ambitious gang leader in post-World War I Birmingham, is seemingly coming to its end.

In an interview with the Entertainment Weekly, the director revealed that the series was supposed end right at the start of WWII.

However, new film takes place a few years later, in 1940, when war is already under progress.

Knight explained that although the timeline has shifted for the movie, his original vision for the series ending was tied to the very beginning of World War II.

But after sitting with the story and finding inspiration from a few historical events Knight decided to tweak his original plan.

He went on share that while he originally planned for a seventh season and then finish the story with a movie, unfortunately pandemic happened which prevented them from working on season 7.

He said, "So rather than delay, we went straight to the film. But it was always the plan to finish with a feature film. It's a good way to end it."

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man hits selected cinemas on March 6, followed by Netflix on March 20.
