James Van Der Beek bought Texas ranch just weeks before his death

James Van Der Beek, known for his breakout role in Dawson’s Creek, completed the purchase of the 36-acre ranch in Spicewood, Texas on January 9, 2026, just 33 days before his death from stage 3 colorectal cancer at age 48. 

Property records show the estate was acquired for $4.76 million through a limited liability company managed by a California attorney, with the family having rented the same property since moving from California in 2020.

According to Daily Mail, the expansive ranch, nestled near Austin, includes a large main house, several cabins, a pool and views of the Pedernales River, features the Van Der Beeks had grown to cherish during their years living there. 

Originally a trial relocation for the actor, his wife Kimberly described the property’s open landscape as ideal for raising their six children and offering space for family life away from Hollywood’s bustle.

Van Der Beek publicly shared his cancer diagnosis in November 2024 and spent his final years focusing on family, often documenting moments at the ranch. 

Moreover, the purchase of the property has been seen by supporters as an effort to secure a permanent home for his widow and children.

In the wake of his death, friends have launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Kimberly and the children, citing financial strain after extensive medical costs.
