Melanie Martinez has marked her return to music with a fresh single, Possessions which fans suspect is from her untitled fourth studio album since she confirmed that it would be coming out along with a fifth in 2026.

The 30-year-old had previously stated that her upcoming songs were set to give off “dystopian/utopian” vibes, and the track matches the description with pensive guitar notes and drums that add a sense of urgency.

In Possession, the Play Date hit maker sings about a toxic relationship with lyrics like “Baby, I'm your possession, handle me like a weapon/ Gaslight me right, tell me, 'Keep quiet'" marking the chorus.

Melanie, who had teased the track on her Instagram days prior to its release, describes a relationship full of objectification and emotional abuse.

It is unclear if the CJ Baran produced single is hinting at a prominent theme for the album or if it will feature multiple different sentiments.

The track has gotten mixed reactions online, with internet users calling it an okay song that sounds like a mix of her previous albums Portals and Crybaby.

“This is FANTASTIC. I just wish it didn’t end so… abruptly. Where’s the bridge? Where’s the cathartic finale? Structurally it sounds unfinished, despite the IMPECCABLE production,” one netizen wrote on Reddit in the discussion thread of the subreddit r/popheads.
