Inside Chris Appleton’s cancer scare while writing his memoir
What forced Chris Appleton to self-reflect on his book idea?
Hairstylist Chris Appleton revealed that in the midst of writing his new book, titled Your Roots Don't Define You, he had "a cancer scare" that required an operation.
The 42-year-old, known for his dazzling makeovers, appeared on the show TODAY to promote his book on January 20.
Kim Kardashian’s hairstylist revealed that no one knew that he had a but he actually had a “cancer scare” while writing the book, noting, ‘the same cancer my mom had, which was esophageal cancer."
He went on to mark names of those who had been there through the difficult time, "Kim Kardashian, obviously she's my client and friend, she helped me a lot during that time, and her dad died of it. So it was pretty scary," Appleton said.
He had "pretty intensive tests" and had an operation. However, Chris did not disclose if he was diagnosed with cancer or what medical issue the procedure addressed.
The situation made the father of two think over what he had written. "I remember thinking, 'Have I been really honest about, like, what I have to say, or have I had an edited version of myself?'"
Appleton added, "I realized I really had an edited version of my life. So in that moment, that's when the book got scrapped, the title got scrapped, and I rewrote it."
The looming threat of esophageal cancer completely transformed how Appleton envisioned his upcoming book project.
"Look, I basically wanted to claim my narrative before there was any chance it could be snatched away from me, you know? And beyond that, I was driven to genuinely assist folks," Appleton revealed while discussing his literary work.
"My goal was to peel back the layers and demonstrate to readers exactly how they can revolutionize their existence and stage their own resurrection," he concluded,
