Prince Harry and Meghan Markle surprised royal fans when they introduced their first child to the world in May 2019, not just because of the new arrival, but because of his unexpected name.
Instead of choosing a traditional royal name, the couple opted for Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, a choice that instantly sparked speculation.
Now six years old, Archie lives in the US with Harry, Meghan, and his little sister Princess Lilibet, but the story behind his name traces back to Harry’s military days.
For years, insiders have believed that Archie was named after someone deeply significant to Harry and the connection is far more personal than many realised.
According to reports, Harry served alongside Major Tom Archer-Burton, widely known by his nickname “Archie.”
The two built a strong bond during Harry’s army career, and the Major reportedly played a pivotal role during some of Harry’s most difficult moments.
Harry has previously credited Archie with helping him stay in the military at a time when he was told he couldn’t fight in Iraq in 2007. The Major also played a role in shielding details of Harry’s deployment from leaking to the public.
Speaking just days after Prince Archie’s birth, a source told The Sun: “It’s well known in Army circles, and Archie’s inner circle, that baby Archie is a nod to him. The two men have stayed in regular contact, and Archie has met most of Harry’s family including Meghan.”
They added: “It’s an incredible honour but Archie is an incredibly modest chap, and won’t be making a big deal of it.”
