Yorgos Lanthimos says he’s finally taking break after ‘Bugonia’

After three back-to-back films with Emma Stone, Yorgos Lanthimos is taking a filmmaking hiatus

The five-time Oscar nominee revealed he’s planning to take “a little break” following the wide release of his latest film, Bugonia, which opened on October 31.

Despite vowing to rest after Poor Things (2023) and Kinds of Kindness (2024), the Greek filmmaker admitted this time he means it.

“Well, I can’t keep doing that anymore,” he told Collider. “It’s a big mistake. I think I need a break. I’ve said that before in between the other three, but I’m serious now. You can hold me to it.”

Lanthimos’ decision comes after Poor Things earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Director, while Emma Stone won Best Actress for her performance.

The duo went on to film Kinds of Kindness as Lanthimos wrapped post-production on Poor Things.

Explaining his back-to-back filming streak, he said he often pushes himself to shoot new projects as soon as scripts are ready.

“You find the will and the strength, but at some point, it runs out,” he said. “We’re at that point.”

Bugonia, now playing in select theatres, stars Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis as conspiracy theorists who kidnap a powerful CEO, played by Stone, believing she’s an alien out to destroy Earth.
