Emma Stone and Jennifer Aniston almost collaborated for the first time onscreen in the new thriller Bugonia, directed by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos.

The Oscar-winning actress, who plays a high-powered pharmaceutical CEO abducted by two conspiracy-obsessed men (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis), dished on Aniston’s cameo in the new movie.

As the abductors wear Jennifer Aniston face masks as part of their bizarre scheme, Stone revealed how they actually got permission from the Friends alum.

Speaking with PEOPLE, Stone made it clear that the masks were Lanthimos’ idea.

“He’s a huge Friends fan,” she asserted. “He really is!”

However, Plemons, who has never worked with Aniston, admitted it took him “a little while to come around” to the idea of wearing a mask with her face during the harrowing sequence.

He also reflected on filming a separate scene where he and his co-conspirator burn the masks.

“Now I can’t imagine anything else,” he said. “Watching the Jennifer Aniston mask, watching her face burn in the fire in that sequence over and over again…”

As for getting Aniston’s permission to use her likeness in the film, Stone said it was an easy email exchange.

“Yorgos and I emailed her to ask permission, to make sure she knew what was going to be happening, and she’s amazing,” Stone said. “She was like, ‘Go for it. Yes,’ so supportive. But I don’t think she’s seen it yet, so hopefully she still feels that way.”

“After all, Jennifer’s half Greek,” Stone added, noting that Aniston’s late father, John Aniston, was born in Crete. “I mean, she gets it.”

Bugonia is currently playing in select theatres and will release nationwide on October 31.
