As Wednesday season 2 returns on Netflix with more gothic mysteries and eerie details, the costume designers found themselves navigating creative chaos.

This season introduces a more inquisitive Wednesday (Jenna Ortega), a bolder Enid (Emma Myers), greater involvement from Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), and even Lady Gaga as Rosaline Rootwood.

Costume designers Colleen Atwood and Mark Sutherland explained to PEOPLE how they kept Wednesday’s all-black wardrobe fresh, elevated Enid’s look after her big “wolf-out” last season, and crafted striking new styles for the latest characters, including Rootwood.

Designing Wednesday and Enid's contrasting wardrobes

Starting with Wednesday’s famously colour-allergic, monochromatic style, Mark revealed that he, Colleen, and Jenna worked closely to refine her looks.

“Once we start getting scripts, we’ll have an idea of what Wednesday has to do — like if she’s at Willow Hill, and it’s in the dark, what will we utilise? We need something that reflects in the dark,” Mark explained.

Because Wednesday spends much of the season in detective mode, the team added subtle “detective elements” to her outfits — even her school uniform — to reflect her investigative persona.

“It’s about working with what we know about Wednesday and elevating her without losing the essence of her character,” Mark added.

For Enid, who embraces a more rebellious edge, her costumes evolved with fine Angora wool stripes symbolising her werewolf traits.

“She’s the ‘It girl’ this season,” Mark said. “We wanted to bring that into her casual wear, and a lot of it came from Japanese street style. She’s got tears in her tights, that wolfy element that really shows who she’s becoming.”

Morticia Addams’ dramatic transformation

Colleen admitted she wanted to expand Morticia’s wardrobe in season 1 but finally had the chance this season.

“That outfit evolved,” Colleen recalled. “We knew we wanted a super sculpted, dramatic look for her. Catherine suggested a black pith helmet with the veil, and we added the parasol as the final touch — it just completed the look.”

Designing Lady Gaga’s Rosaline Rootwood

When it came to Gaga’s ghostly character, the designers wanted to avoid clichés.

“Her character had an origin story tied to the script, which placed her in the ’30s, so her look is an homage to that era — with a slight flare at the bottom,” Colleen explained.

Instead of a traditional white ghost ensemble, they opted for “a really pale grey” with platinum hair, layered with a sheer white silk veil to give an ethereal finish.

“She was in this weird rig to fly across the room — and she did it herself,” Colleen added.
