Sydney Sweeney filming the female boxer Christy Martin biopic came at the cost of “gnarly bruises.”

During an interview at the Variety Toronto Film Festival Studio, Sweeney said, “I was getting pummeled. They were holding ice packs to my face in between takes. I was getting knocked up. I had some gnarly bruises after that.”

In one scene, she reenacted the iconic fight between trailblazing boxing champ Christy — the film’s real-life inspiration — and Laila Ali, which left her with a “crazy black eye.”

The Emmy nominee filmed the boxing sequences “back to back to back” within a single week, while also training in the off hours.

“I’d wrap after a 12-hour shoot and then I’d go train for another two hours,” she told the outlet. “That whole week was grueling.”

Sweeney, who put on 30 pounds to get into character — a transformation that has created Oscar-worthy buzz around her — explained how she gained the weight.

“I had a nutritionist work with me as well as a weight trainer and a boxing trainer,” Sweeney said. “We upped my calorie intake and I started taking a lot of protein shakes and supplements and eating everything. I ate a lot of Smuckers, a lot of PB and J sandwiches, milkshakes, kind of just constantly always eating because we were so active.”

Although it was challenging for the actress, as she “was constantly burning it all off at the same time. So keeping it all up was quite a challenge.”
