After receiving the Career Leopard award at the Locarno Film Festival on Saturday night, Aug. 9, Jackie Chan sat with the audience for a Q&A session.

He was speaking with Locarno head Giona Nazzaro on Sunday morning, Aug. 10, at a packed-out Q&A session.

In the discussion, Chan shared that he believes the big Hollywood studios are compromising on quality because they are obsessed with money.

“I think the old movies are better than today,” Chan said. “Right now, a lot of big studios, they’re not filmmakers, they’re business guys. They invest 40 million and think, ‘How can I get it back?’ And you can’t go over. It’s very difficult to make a good movie now.”

A key theme that ran through the conversation was Chan’s all-in approach to filmmaking, mastering everything from stunt choreography to acting and even sound work.

With a grin, he added that in Asian cinema, only two directors could match that kind of all-around expertise.

“In all of Asia, only two directors can do everything: the writing, directing, acting, stunt coordinating, stunt fighting, and editing. Only two,” he began. “One is Sammo Hung, the second one is Jackie Chan.”
