Wednesday closed this month with a twisted cliffhanger ending to Part 1, keeping us on the edge of our seats, waiting for the next batch of episodes.
The co-creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have crafted a four-part opener so spellbinding it leaves audiences craving more.
“We felt that if we were going to split the season,” Millar told ScreenRant, “then the end of the fourth episode needed to be something amazing; a cliffhanger to bring the audience back for the next chapter. That was an exciting challenge.”
Leading into Season 2, it began with Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) on a quest to uncover the mystery behind two murders, while trying to save her friend Enid.
Meanwhile, Netflix’s macabre darling is undergoing a psychic burnout, temporarily losing her abilities. When her mother, Morticia Addams (Catherine Zeta-Jones), withdrew her offer of help, she turned to classic crime-solving.
This led her to Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital, where she discovered the LOIS programme with Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen).
While the duo confronted the avian controlling black birds, they freed every patient in Willow Hill, including Tyler (Hunter Doohan), the Hyde.
But let’s get to the root of the mystery: LOIS.
Initially mistaken for a person, LOIS was revealed to be an acronym for Long-Term Outcast Integration Study.
It came to light when Fester infiltrated Willow Hill to investigate, discovering that the secretive and disturbing programme was masterminded by Augustus Stonehurst (Philip Philmar).
The programme was later continued by his daughter, Judi, who masquerades as Dr Fairburn’s mild-mannered assistant throughout the season.
The LOIS project aims to exploit outcasts and transfer their powers to normies, maintaining the balance between the two groups.
They conduct experiments in secret, kidnapping outcasts into Willow Hill’s basement while faking their deaths.
The Part 1 finale opens with a twist, bringing Laurel Gates (Christina Ricci) back into the story.
She is brought to Willow Hill to be interrogated by Dr Fairburn (Thandiwe Newton), so she can better understand controlling a Hyde.
Laurel agrees to help, but only on the condition she sees Tyler first.
During their meeting, Tyler transforms into a Hyde, claws poised to kill Laurel, but stops short of harming her. Meanwhile, Fester manages to get inside Willow Hill, uncovering LOIS with Wednesday.
However, when things take a dismal turn with assistant Judi, the true mastermind, Fester’s powers cause a blackout, triggering an outcast uprising that allows Wednesday and her uncle to flee.
In the chaos, Laurel runs to free Tyler, who transforms into a Hyde and fatally wounds her before throwing Wednesday out of the window.
As the Addams family daughter lies unconscious in the rain while police attempt to take down Tyler, he vanishes into the woods.
The episode ends with Wednesday’s voiceover, recalling her mother’s words: “Maybe I have made everything worse. Much worse.”
Tyler has escaped Willow Hill, but a Hyde without a master is a loose cannon.
After stabbing Laurel, Tyler’s fate is now unpredictable, and his mental state deteriorates without a master to guide him.
After crossing paths with Wednesday, who he thrown out of the window, Tyler disappeared into the woods.
Reports suggest he may have gone to his abandoned home in Jericho, the ruins of the Gates estate, or deep into the surrounding forest.
But he leaves one burning question: is Wednesday dead?
The black-clad heroine might appear stone-cold on the ground at the end of Season 2 Part 1, but she’ll be back in action for Part 2.
There’s much more in Netflix’s official trailer that’s yet to be seen in the second half of Season 2.
Moreover, with the storyline of Ophelia, Morticia’s sister, left open-ended in the first part, there’s a strong possibility Wednesday will learn the connection between her psychic powers in Part 2.
Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 will be released on Netflix on Wednesday, 3 September.
