Rising British actor Corey Mylchreest, best known for his role in Netflix’s Queen Charlotte, has returned to the streaming service — this time sparking on-screen chemistry in My Oxford Year.

Corey stars in the movie alongside Grammy-nominated artist Sofia Carson.

My Oxford Year, directed by Iain Morris and starring Carson as Anna and Corey as Jamie, is based on the 2018 book by Julia Whelan.

The story revolves around Anna, an ambitious young American woman who gets admitted to her dream university, Oxford. The academically driven girl’s life takes a turn when she meets a local — and her professor — Jamie.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the interviewer brought up the karaoke scene from the film, asking Corey if he had prepared for it or just improvised.

“I was up for anything, but it [the song] was decided beforehand,” the actor told the outlet. “We actually filmed two versions of that. We filmed it with ‘Yellow’ and we also filmed it with ‘Careless Whisper’ because we didn’t know what we would get the rights to.”

The period drama actor explained that they shot two takes of the scene — both showing Jamie genuinely trying at first, then eventually giving in to the humor.

“And then we also did one where he’s taken out the whole thing from the beginning,” Corey added. “That scene is a very painful one for me to watch. There was a cast and crew screening I went to yesterday, and I had a hat on, and I pulled my hat down, my T-shirt up, and I literally blocked out my ears. I just can’t do it.”

My Oxford Year is now streaming on Netflix.
