Emmy-winning actress Sharon Stone has opened up about her relationship with two-time Oscar-winner Michael Douglas over the years.
The A-list Hollywood duo is best known for their roles in the 1992 erotic thriller Basic Instinct, after which the pair stayed in touch for decades.
However, in a recent interview with Business Insider, the Cannes-winning actress recalled that Douglas didn’t even want to look at her, let alone work with her, because of a heated argument they once had.
Stone explained the incident took place at the Cannes Film Festival.
“A bunch of us were all sitting, and he was talking about someone and their kids. I really, really knew this person he was talking about,” Stone said of Douglas. “So I said something, and he responded to me, saying, ‘What the f--- do you know?’ It was in regard to a father-child relationship.”
Stone added that her comment clearly triggered Douglas, and he started shouting while others were present.
So, she asked him, “Let’s step outside,” and according to Stone, that’s how they properly met.
After they stepped outside, “I explained to him what the f--- I knew about this family he was speaking about, and that I was best friends with the children and the parent,” Stone claimed. “And then we parted. I wouldn’t say as best friends, but amicably.”
However, Douglas’ rep, Allen Burry, told PEOPLE that the Ant-Man star was “very surprised [by Sharon’s quotes],” as “he doesn’t remember any argument in that timeframe.”
“He actually only remembers seeing and meeting Sharon for the first time when he saw [director] Paul Verhoeven’s screen test of her for Basic Instinct, and [Michael] said, ‘Absolutely, she’s the one,’” Burry told the outlet.
While Douglas “definitely spent time with” Stone at Cannes, Burry added that “that was later, when they were promoting Basic Instinct in 1992. And by the time they’d done the movie, they were friends.”
