Sydney Sweeney's most recent American Eagle campaign has drawn harsh criticism and sparked a heated discussion about marketing, race, and responsibility.
The 27-year-old Euphoria star was featured earlier this week as the face of American Eagle's fall denim campaign, which featured the tagline, "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," a purposeful parody of the phrase "great genes."
In one widely shared video, she is seen standing in front of a poster that reads, "Sydney Sweeney has great genes," with the word "genes" crossed out and "jeans" in its place.
In a different video, Sweeney states, "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often control features like hair colour, personality, and even eye colour," as the camera moves to her blue eyes. She then goes on to say, "My jeans are blue."
However, though the campaign's clever wordplay was meant to be bold and playful, the emphasis on genetics and Sweeney's blue eyes conducted to accusations on social media platforms that it promoted eugenics, white supremacy, and racial undertones.
Sweeney and American Eagle had yet to publicly address the controversy as of Tuesday morning, and their silence has become a lightning bar in and of itself.
Sydney Sweeney remains in contact with ex-fiancé Jonathan Davino after their wedding was called off earlier this year.
