Sydney Sweeney is the focus of a new American Eagle ad campaign that has drawn criticism for what one critic described as "one of the loudest and most obvious racialised dog whistles we've seen and heard in a while."
The 27-year-old A-list actress is the face of the brand's fall ad campaign, which features the slogan, "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans."
The Spokane, Washington born beauty, who is slated to play boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic that is already generating Oscar buzz, is seen wearing a range of denim-based outfits in a series of photos.
The Emmy nominated actress's commercial's wording was criticised for what some critics claimed were problematic aspects of the messaging.
According to a Salon report on the backlash, the term "great genes" is "historically used to celebrate whiteness, thinness, and attractiveness," which left "this campaign seeming like a tone-deaf marketing move."
However, people flooded the comments section with negativity, leaving harsh remarks that cast a shadow over the actress’s post.
One user echoed “Close enough, welcome back 1930s Germany.”
Another person said the promotion “is what happens when you have no [people] of color in a room ... particularly in a time like this.”
“This ad campaign got so caught up in this “clever” play on words and this stunt the ppl in the room missed what was so blatantly obvious to anyone not White. I’d expect this from Abercrombie… but not yall.”
"There is something so effortless about American Eagle," Sweeney stated in a news release regarding the fall campaign on 23 July.
"It's the perfect balance of being put together but still feeling like yourself," she said of the clothing designer.
