Rachel Zegler has officially made her return as Eva Perón in Evita in the West End, London, after exiting earlier.
She was forced to step out before the intermission on the Thursday, July 24 show due to "an illness" and her understudy, Bella Brown, continued in her stead.
Brown lived up to Zegler's critically acclaimed performance as her rendition of Don't Cry for Me Argentina received a five minute standing ovation.
However, her brief exit led to vitriol online as people criticized her for leaving. One user commented, “Rachel Zegler ruining everything she’s a part of still,” while a second person remarked, “Give her a job at McDonalds. It’s clear this woman isn’t cut out for entertainment. Stop giving her charity.”
Another person stated, “On Broadway, they would be demanding their $ back. So apparently woke Snow White is creating box office disasters on two continents.”
However, critics have been gushing over her performance, as The Independent wrote, “Zegler beautifully portrays Evita as a natural performer who effortlessly acts her way out of small-town mediocrity, pretending to fall for men who can help her get gigs, then snapping out of it just as fast. When she marries Perón, her new position as the dictator's wife is the ultimate role.”
