Jurassic World: Rebirth surpassed Brad Pitt and Joseph Kosinski’s F1: The Movie by earning $318.3 million globally at its opening weekend.
The sequel to 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion garnered $91.5 million domestically, while F1: The Movie made only $55.6 million.
In just three days in theatres, the film broke records by having the second-biggest premiere after 2020’s Jurassic World and Universal’s biggest opening of the year.
Impressively, it left behind How to Train Your Dragon, Pixar’s Elio and 28 Days Later at box office.
Directed by Gareth Edwards, the sci-fi thriller film has a star-studded main cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali.
Johansson plays Zora Bennet, a former military, Bailey plays Dr. Henry Loomis, a palaeontologist, and Ali plays Duncan Kincaid, a friend of Zora.
The trio, along with two other team members, venture off on a secret mission to the island of Ile Saint-Hubert, which is said to hold dinosaur DNA.
Development began shortly after Jurassic World Dominion when producer Steven Spielberg brought David Koepp on board.
Edwards is an economical genre director who is known for his high-concept blockbusters, with the likes of Godzilla and Star Wars: Prequel Rogue One.
While Koepp had previously worked on the franchise as a writer on Jurassic Park: The Lost World and Jurassic Park.
After its London premiere at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on 17th June, the film hit theatres in the United States and Canada on 2nd July.
