Sly Stone, whose real name was Sylvester Stewart, passed away at the age of 82 after dedicating his life to the development of funk and R&B music.
The ground breaking innovator was most notable for being the frontman of Sly and the Family Stone, who were considered the “greatest funk band” by George Clinton of Parliament Funkadelic.
The news of his demise was announced on June 9 by his close family member: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved dad.”
It was revealed in the statement that the legendary singer died after “a prolonged battle with COPD and other underlying health issues.”
The Higher hitmaker breathed his last while he was “surrounded by his three children, his closest friend, and his extended family.”
“While we mourn his absence, we take solace in knowing that his extraordinary musical legacy will continue to resonate and inspire for generations to come,” the bereaved family member noted.
Before passing away, the record producer “completed the screenplay for his life story,” which will release for his fans at the right time.
The band, which also included two of his siblings, created chart-topping hits like Dance to the Music, Everyday People and Family Affair.
