Prince Harry is facing sharp criticism over a bombshell report claiming he considered dropping his royal surname in favour of “Spencer”, a move experts say would have been “hurtful and vindictive” to King Charles.
According to The Mail on Sunday, Harry allegedly discussed the idea with his uncle, Earl Spencer, during a recent UK trip, but was advised the legal process would be too complicated.
Sussex sources have since dismissed the claim as “completely untrue.”
Still, royal commentator Helena Chard told Fox News the alleged move “has an air of revenge” and would have been a direct blow to the King.
“It highlights Prince Harry’s little to no regard for his family,” she said, adding that frustrations around royal protocols may be fuelling Harry’s decisions.
The controversy comes amid reports that Harry and Meghan faced delays obtaining UK passports for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
The Guardian reported that their lawyers threatened legal action after waiting six months, allegedly due to disputes over the HRH titles.
Buckingham Palace strongly denied any involvement in the delays, and a spokesperson for Harry stated, “We do not comment on private issues pertaining to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s children.”
