The Bachelorette star Katie Thurston gave an update on her journey of fighting stage 4 breast cancer, admitting that she has been facing memory issues and hair loss.
“I wanted to do weekly check-ins that are just like uncut, raw emotions of like whatever comes to my mind,” she began in an Instagram reel. “Every day I’m alive, I’m a survivor. Go me, I guess.”
She initially announced the diagnosis back in February, revealing a month later that it was actually stage 4 since it had metastasized to her liver.
“If you're asking how long treatment is, technically forever. I am optimistic about medical advancements in the future. Fingers crossed as a stage 4 girly,” the reality TV star continued.
About the side effects of the treatment, Thurston said, “My hair is coming out in an unnatural amount of clumps. Working on that.”
“I'm losing my memory,” she added further.
Recalling an incident where she was going through customs at the airport with her husband, she stated, “[They asked], ‘Where are you coming from?’ And I looked at them and I was like, ‘I don't remember. I don't remember.’ Jeff and I got in a — not an argument, but you know, a little disagreement. I was like, ‘This has happened before,’ and he's like, ‘When?’ I was like, ‘I don't know, but I know it has.’”
“We're able to laugh about it,” the star admitted.
“Sometimes I'm like, stop feeling bad for yourself, but then other times I'm like, no, you're allowed to feel bad for yourself. Cancer sucks. I'm at the process of my treatment where I have to make big decisions on how to treat my liver,” she continued.
Golden Bachelorette Joan Vassos, having lost her husband to cancer, showed her support for Thurston, writing, “That hit hard. I’m happy that you know we’re listening to you and how much we admire your bravery and raw emotion. Hang in there and you are in our thoughts and prayers.”
