The plot keeps getting thicker in the ongoing legal battle between Drake and Universal Media Group (UMG).

The drama began back in November when the rapper sued UMG for allegedly conspiring with Spotify.

Drake’s attorneys claimed that the record label and the streaming giant got together to inflate streaming figures of Kendrick Lamar’s Not Like Us.

Things took an unexpected turn when the 38-year-old dropped the initial lawsuit and filed a new one for defamation against UMG for allegedly promoting the diss track.

In February, UMG filed a motion to dismiss discovery, which would have allowed Drake legal access to Lamar’s contract with the music company, including recording deals and salaries of senior executives.

Earlier this month, Judge Jeannette Vargas gave Drizzy the green light, granting the God’s Plan singer access to sensitive documents.

However, podcaster DJ Akademiks threw fuel to the fire after claiming that Drake and UMG are now in cahoots against K-Dot.

Akademiks made the claims on his recent livestream after Drake’s latest track NOKIA climbed to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

"Apparently, it's gonna impact on radio this week because UMG is getting behind the record,” he said.

“The record is gonna get a significant push and yes it does take your major label to help push a record on radio platforms...their relationship with iHeart Media among others is gonna help make a record go from here to here," Akademiks continued.

Akademiks rationalised that it is in UMG’s best interest to promote NOKIA despite the lawsuit.

The podcaster concluded by proclaiming that it would be a big achievement for Drake if he could “de-throw” Lamar off the top spot.

Who is DJ Akademiks?

Livingston Allen, widely known as DJ Akademiks, is a prominent streamer and YouTuber, whose channel has become a go-to source for all things hip-hop.

The 33-year-old is also the host of the podcast Off the Record with DJ Akademiks on Spotify.
