As the nominations of the 2021 Oscar awards were announced on Monday, prominent American actress Viola Davis, breaking her own record, has become the most-nominated Black actress in history.

The How To Get Away With Murder star has earned her fourth Academy Award nomination in the Best Actress category for her stunning performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. This year’s nomination has made the celebrated actress the most-nominated Black actress ever at the Oscars.

Davis, 55, first earned the honor in 2017 when she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences. She also won her first Oscars in that category.

She first earned her Best Supporting Actress nomination in 2008 for Doubt, and a Best Actress nomination in 2011 for The Help.

Davis is in the race to win her first Oscar for Best Actress as she’s competing against actresses Andra Day in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Vanessa Kirby in Pieces of a Woman, Frances McDormand in Nomadland and Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman.
