SZA reveals she dropped out of college and left home to pursue music

SZA is getting candid about her journey from a college dropout to a successful musician.

Speaking to New York Times, the 33-year-old singer revealed that she got enrolled in a marine biology program at Delaware State University.

However, the Kill Bill singer could not keep up and eventually had to drop out. "I drank Malibu and smoked weed every day. And slept," she said.

The Grammy winner returned to her native New Jersey, where she started to bartend and occasionally dance at various strip clubs as a side hustle – until her “cretin” sister snitched on her.

It was the lack of clarity and her mother’s insistence that led SZA to step outside her comfort zone and kick off her music career with the release of her debut album Ctrl in 2017.

"When I wouldn't do the college thing they wanted, my mom kind of insinuated that I had to like, get out," the Blind singer shared.

"I started staying on people's couches and vibing aimlessly. That sent me into a crazy depression but also lit a fire under my ass," she added.
