Kevin Sussman says Stuart steps into spotlight in new 'Big Bang Theory' spinoff

Kevin Sussman says audiences will finally see Stuart Bloom embrace a leadership role in HBO Max's upcoming The Big Bang Theory spinoff, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, marking a dramatic shift for the fan-favorite comic book store owner.

After spending years as the socially awkward outsider on the hit sitcom, Stuart becomes the central character in the new sci-fi comedy, which follows him as he attempts to stop a multiverse catastrophe. 

Speaking to People, Sussman said the series offers viewers a chance to watch Stuart "step up" in ways they have never seen before.

The actor explained that while Stuart retains his familiar insecurities and awkward charm, the show's storyline forces him to take charge. 

Moreover, Lauren Lapkus returns as Denise, Stuart's girlfriend, with Sussman describing her character as a grounding influence who helps keep him focused throughout the adventure. 

As per the outlet, Brian Posehn reprises his role as Bert Kibbler, while John Ross Bowie returns as Barry Kripke.

Series co-creator Chuck Lorre acknowledged that Stuart may seem like an unconventional choice to headline a spinoff but said that was precisely what made the character appealing. 

Lorre revealed he never considered anyone other than Sussman for the lead, arguing that Stuart's flaws and vulnerability make him a relatable hero.

Unlike its predecessor, the new series blends sitcom humor with large-scale science fiction, visual effects and multiverse storytelling. 

Created by Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe premieres on HBO Max on July 23, with all 10 episodes releasing simultaneously.
